Washington Wizards: Reclaiming Their Magic
The Washington Wizards began their career in 1961. They started as the Chicago Packers and changed their name 5 times over the years, finally becoming the Wizards in 1997. The team has won 7 division titles, 4 Conference titles, and 1 NBA Championship title. However, since 1979, the franchise has failed to mount the necessary momentum to make a lasting mark on the NBA.
The team's most successful streak began in 1969. Due to a series of serendipitous events, they were able to rack up 6 division titles within 7 years. They made it into the NBA Finals at the end of the 1971 season and were swept by the better-prepared Milwaukee Bucks. They returned to the Finals in 1975 as the favored team. Unfortunately, they were once again swept, this time by the Golden State Warriors. However, invigorated by their near misses, the Wizards battled their way back to the Finals at the end of 1978, surprising the league by defeating the Seattle SuperSonics. It was the franchise's first, and last, NBA Championship title.
The following twenty years were disappointing for the team. Despite changes in the player roster and the coaching ranks, they posted consistent losing records. There were moments of promise, but the Wizards were in a slump from which they couldn't break free. In 2000, NBA legend Michael Jordan became the franchise's President Of Operations. The following year, he began playing for the team. Unfortunately, though fan anticipation was high, Jordan ended the season with an injured knee.
The years following Jordan's presence on the Wizards were marked by constant struggles amid fleeting success. The team has managed to retain gifted players such as Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison, but several productive players have been injured recently. Even so, fans maintain high expectations for the Wizards.
Live At The Phone Booth
The Verizon Center opened in 1997 and serves as home base for the Washington Wizards. Fans have given the venue the moniker "Phone Booth" because the naming rights seem exclusively reserved for telecom companies (MCI before Verizon). The stadium seats nearly 20,200 people and ticket prices start at $17. You can catch the Wizards live at the Phone Booth by reserving your seats online. However, act quickly because tickets often sell quickly.
