Utah Jazz: Return To Glory
Known as one of the most formidable playoff contenders in the NBA, the Utah Jazz were founded in 1974. There were originally headquartered in New Orleans, but dismal performance during their first 5 seasons coupled with declining fan loyalty and attendance. Eventually, to help stem financial losses for the franchise, the Jazz relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
Their first few years in Utah were uninspiring. However, the team began a transformation in 1984 when John Stockton was added to the ranks. During the following year, Karl Malone was recruited. Together, they would come to form one of the most effective 2-man teams in the NBA. They were know throughout the league for their signature "pick and rolls." However, their ability to baffle players from opposing teams wasn't enough to push the Jazz through the playoffs.
In 1988, Jerry Sloan was promoted from assistant coach to the head coaching position. Despite the clear direction from Sloan and the productive Stockton and Malone combo, the franchise continued to struggle on the court. It wasn't until 1994 that the team finally advanced to the Conference Finals where they were defeated by the Houston Rockets.
At the end of 1997, the Jazz entered the postseason with a 64-18 record. With a strong starting line that included Stockton and Malone, they fought their way into the NBA finals. Unfortunately, they were trounced by the Chicago Bulls. The following season, hopes were high and the Jazz posted a 62–20 record. They stormed through the playoffs into the NBA Finals, losing once again to the Bulls. By 2002, Stockton, Malone, and Jeff Hornacek had left the team, and the Jazz began to rebuild.
