San Antonio Spurs: Building A Dynasty
Founded in 1967, the San Antonio Spurs are widely regarded as one of the most impressive teams in the NBA. Throughout the past 40 years, they have competed in all but 4 playoffs. They've dominated their division 15 times, earned 4 Conference titles, and have won 4 NBA Championships. Originally called the Dallas Chaparrals, the Spurs have immersed themselves into the San Antonio community and enjoy one of the most loyal fan bases in the NBA.
The team began in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and migrated to the NBA in 1976. They posted a winning record during their first NBA season, putting to rest any doubts regarding their ability to compete. However, while they were extremely productive on the court each season, they were unable to muster the momentum to climb into the NBA Finals. In 1985, their star player, George Gervin, was traded and the Spurs fell into a 4-year slump.
In 1989, with the acquisition of David Robinson, the franchise began to regain prominence. They posted consecutive winning records season after season, but still failed to advance to the NBA Finals. Finally, in 1997, they posted their worst record in the team's history: 20-62. This led to the drafting of Tim Duncan, a move that would transform the franchise.
Robinson and Duncan proved to be an effective 2-man combo and in 1999, they finally led the Spurs to their first NBA Championship title. However, partly due to injuries, the team was defeated during the playoffs in the following 3 seasons. In 2003, they repeated their earlier success and won their second NBA title.
The 2000's have been a defining period for the Spurs. They've returned to the NBA Finals twice (in 2005 and 2007), winning the Championship title in both years. In the process, they have evolved from a playoff contender into a dynasty.
