Sacramento Kings: Playing For Glory
The Sacramento Kings started their career as a member of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1945. They were originally known as the Rochester Royals. After a series of relocations and name changes, they eventually landed in Sacramento in 1985. Perhaps due to lack of viable competition during the 1940's, the Kings had immediate success in the NBL and earned consecutive Championship titles in 1946 and 1947. They joined the NBA in 1948 and continued to push past most of their opponents by winning their division. And in 1951, the Kings successfully earned their first NBA Championship title.
The following 3 decades were a period of false starts, dashed hopes, and hard work. The team boasted a roster of gifted players. However, their chemistry on the court was often ineffective. In 1979, Cotton Fitzsimmons was hired as head coach to curb the franchise's losses. He would lead them to a division title that season before the Kings were eventually defeated. Further success eluded the team and in 1985, with fan loyalty wavering, they moved to Sacramento.
For 10 years, the Kings operated with near anonymity, having advanced to the playoffs in only 1 season. In 1997, a series of player acquisitions helped to boost the franchise's status in the league. They spent a few seasons learning their on-court chemistry and by 2001, had defeated the Phoenix Suns in the first round of playoffs. The following season, they improved further, advancing into the third round before meeting defeat. However, in 2005, several starters left the team, and the Kings's performance suffered.
The few years that followed are bookended by the hiring and trading of Ron Artest. While he was a productive player, he failed to rally the team. Eventually, he was traded in 2008, signaling a rebuilding period for the Kings.
A Change Of Venue?
Currently, the Sacramento Kings play at ARCO Arena. It was built in 1988 and seats 17,300 people for basketball games. However, the stadium is old and fast becoming obsolete (by NBA standards). Plus, the Kings's recent record has led to a significant decline in attendance. Speculation abounds regarding an impending relocation.
