Portland Trail Blazers: Overcoming Obstacles
The Portland Trail Blazers were founded as an expansion team in 1970. The franchise is owned by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Over the past 40 years, they have collected 4 division titles, 3 Conference titles, and 1 NBA Championship under their belt. However, like many expansion teams, the Trail Blazers had early difficulty gaining respect in the league. They worked furiously and within 7 years, the team advanced to the NBA Finals and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers to win the title.
During the 1980's, the Trail Blazers fought their way into the playoffs during every season except 1982. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Lakers had built a dynasty and virtually dominated the NBA throughout the decade. As a result, the franchise was always defeated before the Western Conference Finals.
Paul Allen purchased the team in 1988. The following 12 months were spent revamping the lineup. Veterans were traded in order to acquire players who could shore up the Blazers's lagging defense. Rick Adelman, already an assistant coach with the team, was picked to replace Mike Schuler as head coach. The new team was finally in place and in 1990, on the back of Clyde Drexler's efforts, the franchise made it into the 1990 NBA Finals. They lost to the Detroit Pistons, but returned to the Finals in 1992. Success eluded them once again and they were defeated by the Lakers.
The rest of the decade was spent rebuilding and effectively, ripping apart the team that had played in the Finals. The first half of the 2000's were devastatingly bad for the Blazers. Players were arrested for marijuana, charged with sexual assault, and fought amongst each other. While they performed relatively well on the court, fan loyalty began to wane. By the end of 2006, the Rose Garden Stadium, having failed to attract fans, was bankrupt.
Trail Blazers In The Garden
Paul Allen stepped forward in 2007 to purchase the Rose Garden, making it a viable venue for the Blazers again. Today, the Blazers continue to play their home games in the Garden, which can seat 20,600 fans for NBA games. The stadium has a unique configuration that includes 160 acoustic panels hanging from the roof. The purpose of these panels is to generate more noise from the fans. You can experience the roar of the crowd while watching the Blazers compete live by reserving your seats online.
