Phoenix Suns: On The Hunt
Created as an expansion team in 1968, the Phoenix Suns have only had minor success in the NBA. They have earned 6 division titles and 2 Conference titles. However, despite having advanced to the NBA Finals twice in their career, they have not managed to bring an NBA title home to Phoenix. That said, with a strong lineup, it may only be a matter of time before they win the coveted prize.
After a discouraging first season (not unusual for an expansion team), the Suns posted their first winning record in 1971 under the direction of head coach Cotton Fitzsimmons. The 1970's were filled with promise as the team earned a spot in the playoffs in 8 consecutive seasons. They advanced into the 1976 NBA Finals where they were eventually defeated by the Boston Celtics.
The 1980's began well with consistent performance on the court. However, in 1987, 3 of the Suns players were charged with drug-related crimes and the franchise lost credibility within the NBA. Making matters worse, center Nick Vanos died in a plane crash during the same year. The following few years were spent rebuilding the team in preparation for the next decade.
The Suns advanced to the Conference Finals in 1990, but were defeated by the Portland Trail Blazers. In the following season, they were beaten by the Utah Jazz during the playoffs. In 1992, they pushed their way into the semifinals, but were once again overwhelmed by the Blazers. In 1993, the team beat the Lakers and fought their way to the NBA Finals where they were routed by the Chicago Bulls. The following decade would prove to be a period of disappointment.
The past few years have seen the Suns grow strategically as a team. From 2005, they have won 3 consecutive division titles. A Conference title may be just around the corner.
