Philadelphia 76ers: The Historic Franchise
Created in 1939, the Philadelphia 76ers are the oldest team in the NBA. They have a long history that is marked with both notable victories and discouraging defeats. The team was originally called the Syracuse Nationals and joined the NBA in 1949. In the decades since, they have won 3 NBA Championship titles, along with several Conference and Division titles. And along the way, the franchise became the home for a number of future Basketball Hall of Famers.
Due to the limitations of playing in the small city of Syracuse, the 76ers relocated to Philadelphia in the early 1960's. In 1964, they brought Wilt Chamberlain aboard. By 1967, they had secured their second NBA Championship title (after winning their first in 1956) and were considered the most effective team in the league. But, in 1968, Chamberlain was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers, signaling a decline in the 76ers' performance that would last for several seasons.
In 1976, Julius Erving came aboard the team and led them to that season's NBA Finals (though they eventually lost to the Trail Blazers). The next few years would see the franchise win their Conference, but meet with constant defeat in the Finals. Finally, in 1982, after hiring Moses Malone, the 76ers advanced to the NBA Finals and returned home with their third title.
Future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley joined the team in 1984. Even though his presence on the team wasn't enough to win a fourth NBA title, the fans gravitated toward him until he was traded in 1992. The next several years would prove difficult for the franchise due to declining performance and the challenge of coaching Allen Iverson, a rising star on the team. To date, the 76ers continue to struggle on the road to winning another NBA Championship.
