Orlando Magic: Full Of Potential
Christened the "Magic" by the city of Orlando in 1986, the franchise was officially founded in 1989 as an NBA expansion team. Since their debut, they've battled their way into the playoffs 10 times. And while they haven't yet brought home an NBA Championship title, the team continues to post respectable numbers. In fact, at the end of the last season, the Magic dominated their division.
The franchise's numbers at the end of their first season were consistent with those of most expansion teams. Their record was disappointing as the players struggled to find their collective rhythm. While they performed better during their second season (1990), they still posted a losing record of 31-51. 1991 was a particularly difficult year for the Magic because many of their productive players sustained injuries that kept them off the court. As a result, the team finished that season at 21-61, depressing numbers by most accounts.
In 1992, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal joined the franchise. His arrival sparked a wave of excitement and expectation among fans and players. Though his contribution failed to earn the Magic a spot in the 1993 playoffs, it created a momentum for the team. The following year, they brought Penny Hardaway aboard. Together, he and O'Neal lead the team through a 50–32 season, pushing aside other teams to win a spot in the playoffs. And by 1995, the Orlando Magic had dominated their division, won a Conference title, and stunned other teams by fighting their way into the NBA Finals.
While O'Neal left the team in 1996 and Hardaway was traded in 1999, the team has added other talented players to their roster, including Tracy McGrady and Mike Miller. Despite a few seasons spent struggling, the Magic continue to show strength and durability on the court.
Catching The Magic Live
The Magic plays at the Amway Arena, an indoor stadium that seats 17,500 for NBA games. They share the venue with a number of other professional sports franchises. The arena is older and smaller than many other NBA venues, leading the team to begin exploring other options, including the construction of a new stadium by 2010. To see the Magic perform live in their original home at the Amway Arena, reserve your seats today. Tickets can be purchased online for as little as $5.
