Oklahoma City Thunder: Breaking The Chains
Created in 1967, they were known for the past 4 decades as the Seattle SuperSonics. In 2008, the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City and adopted a new name: the Oklahoma City Thunder. The move was due primarily to a disagreement between the franchise owner, Clayton Bennett and Seattle politicians. In the end, Bennett was able to move his team, but only after paying $45 million for breaking his lease on the KeyArena. As part of the agreement, the team was forced to rename themselves, leaving their old name for another potential NBA franchise.
Most of the team's notable success occurred during the 1970's. Under the guidance of head coach Bill Russell, they were able to participate in the playoffs for their first time in 1975. While the following season was lackluster, the Thunder (SuperSonics at the time) successfully defeated other teams to earn a spot in the 1978 NBA Finals. However, they lost in a 7-game series to the Washington Bullets.
The following year, spurred by their recent defeat, the franchise played their way into the NBA Finals again. The series pitted them against the Bullets. This time, the Thunder was able to defeat the Bullets within 5 games. Unfortunately, it would prove to be the beginning of a major decline in the Thunder's fortunes.
The next two and half decades were discouraging. There were brief shining moments, such as their involvement in the 1987 and 1996 Conference Finals. But, the Thunder failed to generate the momentum they needed to progress into the NBA Finals. Indeed, in most years, they rarely made it to the second round of the playoffs. Finally, Bennett relocated the franchise to prepare for the new season.
The Thunder's New Home
The team plays their home games at Ford Center in Oklahoma City. Opened to fans in 2002, it boasts a seating capacity of 19,600. In early 2008, plans were made (and $121 million in financing was allocated) for a major renovation of the Center. The goal is to expand the venue while adding luxury restaurants, viewing lounges, and an NBA press room. You can watch the Oklahoma City Thunder perform on the court in their new location for as little as $7. Reserve your seats online today.
