New York Knicks: Long Road To Victory
Officially called the New York Knickerbockers, the Knicks were born in 1946. Though they wouldn't earn an NBA Championship title for decades, they were consistent performers, earning a place in the NBA Finals during many years and gaining the admiration of other teams. However, the end of the 1950's signaled the beginning of a long dry spell.
In 1960, the Knicks began their first notable descent. Despite changes to the lineup, the team couldn't seem to gain momentum. From 1960 through 1966, they posted the worst record in their division each year. However, 1967 brought new blood to the franchise and Red Holzman was hired as head coach. He immediately led them into the playoffs, sparking renewed interest in the team. In 1970, the Knicks made it to the NBA Finals, eventually defeating the Lakers to win their first NBA Championship.
The next several years were a time of rebuilding for the franchise. In 1984, boosted by winning the draft lottery, the Knicks brought Patrick Ewing aboard. It was a turning point for the team and Ewing led them to the playoffs by 1988. In 1991, legendary NBA coach Pat Riley was hired to guide the team. Prior to his joining the franchise, Riley had successfully led the Lakers to 4 NBA Championship victories. He had an instant impact on the Knicks.
In 1993, the team advanced to the Conference Finals, though they were eventually defeated by the Chicago Bulls. The following year, they won their division and earned another spot in the playoffs. Though they progressed to the NBA Finals, the team lost in a Game 7 upset to the Houston Rockets. The next several years passed without an NBA title and in 2000, Ewing finally retired, frustrated. Unfortunately, his retirement marked the beginning of the team's lasting slump.
