New Orleans Hornets: The Cusp Of Victory
Starting their NBA career in 1988 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Hornets relocated operations to New Orleans in 2002. They started poorly (similar to all expansion teams) and ended their first season having won only 20 games. The following season yielded even worse results and the team posted a disappointing record of 19-63. In 1991, the Hornets managed to barely eek out a 26-56 record, despite the addition of Kendall Gill.
The next year, Larry Johnson was drafted onto the team. He was elected the 1992 Rookie of the Year, leading in both points and rebounds. However, it wasn't enough to pull the Hornets from the downward spiral they were in, and the franchise ended the season at 31-51. However, their fortunes were about to change.
Alonzo Mourning was drafted in 1992. Along with Gill and Johnson, Mourning vaulted the team to a winning record of 44-38. The trio then launched the team from league obscurity into the playoffs, upsetting the Boston Celtics during the first round. Injuries held the Hornets back during the next 2 seasons, but they returned to playoffs in 1995 after posting a 50-32 record.
The franchise barely missed earning a spot in the 1996 playoffs, but advanced in the following year after posting their best regular season (54-28). They seemed to have little trouble on the court and easily fought through their opponents to 2 more years of playoffs. But, they remained unsuccessful in advancing to the Conference Finals. The years passed and the Hornets were regular playoff contenders. But, each time, they were defeated and sent home.
They lagged considerably in 2004 and 2005, posting dismal numbers during the regular season. It wasn't until 2008 that the team finally broke away from their streak of losing performances and posted a winning 56-26 season.

The Hornets play at the New Orleans Arena, a venue that seats 17,100 fans during NBA events. Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, the stadium served as a makeshift medical support facility. Today, you can purchase tickets online to see the Hornets compete for playoff contention. However, reserve your seats early. The stunning 2008 season drew flocks of fans and multiple sell-outs. Tickets sales for the new season will likely be brisk.
