Minnesota Timberwolves: On The Prowl
Founded in 1989 as an NBA expansion team, the Minnesota Timberwolves were hounded by persistent losing records. They finished their first season at 22-60 and their second season at 29-53. To stop the hemorrhaging, Jimmy Rodgers was hired as head coach. Unfortunately, the losses continued to mount and by the end of the third season, the Timberwolves had earned one of the NBA's worst records: 15-67.
The last half of the 1990's showed moments of potential, notably on the efforts of new addition to the roster, Kevin Garnett. They pushed their way into the franchise's first appearance at the playoffs in 1996, but were dispatched in a first-round sweep by the Houston Rockets. In 1998, desperate to retain their best player, the Timberwolves extended a startling 6-year, $126 million contract to Garnett. Though he signed on and they were regular participants in the playoffs, the team was always quickly defeated.
The Timberwolves were dealt a blow in 2000 when one of their Guards, Malik Sealy, was killed in a traffic collision. The accident seemed to push the team and they posted consistent winning records during each of the following 3 seasons. But, progressing past the first round of each season's playoffs continued to thwart them. Finally, in 2004, they managed to make it to the third round before being beaten by the Los Angeles Lakers. For the Timberwolves, it was still a defining success.
The next few years were stained by personality and contractual issues among the players and head coach, Flip Saunders. In 2005, the franchise failed to earn a place in the playoffs, the first time that had happened in 8 seasons. A series of trades were conducted over the course of the next 2 years and in 2007, Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics. The following year, in a move to inject excitement into the team and its fans, the franchise revealed new uniforms.
The Paint In The Target
In 1990, the Timberwolves moved into the Target Center, a venue with a large seating capacity of 20,500 for basketball games. In 2004, the stadium underwent a renovation to make it friendlier for fans. New seats were added, new signage was lifted, and better access was installed for those with disabilities. Today, the Target Center is one of the crowns of the NBA. If you'd like to see the Timberwolves compete live for an NBA title, reserve your seats online.
