Miami Heat: On Fire
The Miami Heat were founded in 1987 and has been the home for several high-profile players, including Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning. The franchise was born as a result of an NBA expansion to 27 team. Since then, the Heat have the distinction of having earned a spot in the playoffs for 12 seasons. And in 2006, they pummeled their way through the league to win the NBA Championships.
Like most expansion teams, it took awhile for the Heat to find their legs as a team. Despite having talented veterans and gifted new players, they lost their first 17 games of the 1988 season. By the end of the season, the new team finished with the NBA's worst season record: 15–67. In an attempt to inject new flavor into the Heat, Glen Rice was recruited as a first round draft pick in 1989. However, they ended their second season as a franchise with another dismal record: 18–64.
It wasn't until the 1993 season, under the direction of head coach Kevin Loughery, that the franchise finally posted their first winning numbers, taking them to the playoffs. However, they were eventually dismissed by the Atlanta Hawks. The following year witnessed a number of player and management changes. Among them, Loughery was fired to help curb the Heat's losing season. In 1995, coaching legend Pat Riley was brought aboard to change the team.
Riley was instrumental in taking the team to win their division in each season from 1997 to 2000. However, the following 2 seasons were discouraging and Riley, disappointed, resigned from his post in 2003. Shaquille O'Neal joined the team in 2004, forging an effective partnership with Dwayne Wade. Though O'Neal left in 2008, the franchise has picked up a number of exciting new players. Michael Beasley, Darnell Jackson, and 3-point expert James Jones are expected to add new blood and energy to the team.
