Memphis Grizzlies: Hungry For Success
Founded in 1995, the Memphis Grizzlies have the unfortunate distinction of not having ever won a title. Known originally as the Vancouver Mounties, they played in Canada (the first to do so since 1947) before relocating in 2001. Despite their obvious lack of league titles, the franchise is relatively young and has been a playoff contender during several seasons of their career. Fans, players, and management hope that the Grizzlies can emerge from anonymity to claim victory soon.
The last half of the 1990's were discouraging for the team. During their first season, they set the NBA record for longest losing streak (23 games). During the following season, the franchise fared just as badly, ending with the league's worst win-loss record. In 1998 and 1999, the Grizzlies repeated their previous season's accomplishment, coming in last place in both years. Predictably, fans lost hope and attendance began to deteriorate. Finally, in a move to stop bleeding money, the owners sold the franchise and the Grizzlies moved to Memphis.
The relocation didn't ignite any enthusiasm in the team. In 2002 and 2003, they posted losing numbers, despite desperate changes in the player roster and the coaching ranks. Hubie Brown was hired in 2003 to pull the team from the hole. As a result of his efforts, the Grizzlies finally earned a chance to compete in the playoffs.
Even though Brown resigned at the beginning of the following season, the team was able to mount the momentum they needed to post another winning record. However, they reached the playoffs only to be defeated during the first round.
The past 2 seasons have been dismal. Pau Gasol, a core player, was injured in 2006, having a massive impact on the team's performance. By the end of the 2008 season, rumors began to spread about another possible relocation for the franchise.
