Los Angeles Lakers: Rebuilding The Dynasty
Widely regarded as one of the NBA's most productive franchises, the Los Angeles Lakers were founded in Detroit in 1946. The following year, they relocated to Minneapolis, where they stayed until 1960. Since then, the team has called the City of Angels home and has become a veritable legend in the league. During their career, they have amassed a number of records, including the longest winning streak (33 games), most wins (nearly 3,000), and the highest number of appearances in the NBA Finals (29).
The Lakers built their first dynasty early in the 1950's. By the end of that decade, they had already won 4 of their 14 NBA titles. They developed a rivalry with the Boston Celtics beginning in the 1960's. And while the franchise was a formidable contender season after season, they could only bring home 1 NBA title during the 1970's (in 1972).
In 1979, the Lakers drafted Earvin "Magic" Johnson, signaling a new dynasty in the making. By the end of that season, the team had earned their seventh NBA title. But, fans could not have expected what was about to emerge.
Legendary coach Pat Riley was hired in mid-season in 1981. He would eventually lead them to win that season's NBA Championship. The following year, the team recruited James Worthy. On the efforts of Worthy, Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Byron Scott, they dominated most of the decade, earning 5 more NBA titles.
The 1990's were disappointing for the franchise. They added Shaquille O'Neal and future star Kobe Bryant to the ranks, but still failed to mount much of a campaign. In 1999, Phil Jackson was brought aboard as head coach. By then, O'Neal and Bryant had formed a powerful 2-man team and the Lakers won 3 consecutive NBA titles beginning in 2000. Several years of rebuilding followed and in 2008, the franchise returned to the NBA Finals only to be beaten by their long-time rivals, the Celtics.
