Los Angeles Clippers: Fighting For Glory
Beginning their career in 1970 as the Buffalo Braves, the team relocated twice. After spending several years playing in San Diego, they finally found their home in L.A. and officially changed their name to the Los Angeles Clippers. Over the past 40 years, despite numerous opportunities, they have failed to progress further than the playoffs. Today, the Clippers continue to struggle to burst from the shadow of the well-regarded Los Angeles Lakers.
In 1978, due to disappointing ticket sales and consistently poor season-by-season performance, the franchise moved from Buffalo to San Diego. Gene Shue was hired to lead the team as head coach. By the end of the season, the Clippers earned their first winning record. Unfortunately, the following season would mark the beginning of a 13-year slump.
After a series of personnel and coaching changes, the Clippers posted another winning season in 1992, breaking their 13-year drought. Despite advancing into the playoffs in 1992 and 1993, the team was easily beaten both times during the first round. While they returned to the playoffs in 1997, their luck hadn't improved and they were quickly sent home.
Desperate to make changes that would reverse the Clippers's dismal record, management hired Elton Brand from the Chicago Bulls in 2001. In addition, Andre Miller was added to the roster in 2002. While the expectations of fans ran high, the new players' individual performances failed to launch the team into playoff contention. By 2004, a large portion of the Clippers's starting line became free agents and eventually departed.
The franchise's fortunes have mildly improved in recent years. In 2006, they advanced to the second round of the playoffs. However, the following 2 seasons were marred by injuries suffered by core players Shaun Livingston and Elton Brand.
