Indiana Pacers: A Troubled Past
The Indiana Pacers were founded as an American Basketball Association (ABA) franchise in 1967 and joined the NBA in 1976. Though they practically dominated the ABA, their success during their first few years in the NBA was uneven. Making matters worse, the team was in dire straits financially. They struggled for nearly 15 years, barely managing to retain fan loyalty and respect on the court.
In 1987, Reggie Miller was recruited to the team, raising the expectations of the fans and the team's management. However, it wasn't until 1990 that the Pacers advanced to the playoffs (during which they were swept). It was the first of several disappointing playoff appearances. The team returned in 1991 and were defeated by the Celtics. They participated in 1992, but were again beaten by the Celtics. They returned the following year only to be sent home by the New York Knicks. Finally, in 1994, the Pacers successfully won their first NBA playoffs series.
The franchise, in need of a new head coach, chose former Celtics star Larry Bird in 1997. Bird led the team past the playoffs into a Conference Final battle with the Chicago Bulls. Though they forced a 7-game series, they were eventually defeated. In 2000, they earned their first spot in the NBA Finals, but were defeated by the better-prepared Los Angeles Lakers.
The beginning of the new century marked a rebuilding phase for the team. Finally, after a few false starts, they successfully won a division title in 2004. However, the next season would deal a devastating blow to the team. A brawl between the Pacers and Pistons resulted in several players being suspended. It signaled the team's decline and they have since struggled to remain viable contenders within the league.
