Golden State Warriors: A Ray Of Hope
In 1946, the Philadelphia Warriors were created by Peter Tyrrell. The franchise began as a member of the Basketball Association of America (which was converted into the NBA in 1949). They performed reasonably well during their early years, winning a number of division and Conference titles in the 1940's and 1950's. In 1956, the franchise successfully brought home their first NBA Championship title.
Wilt Chamberlain was drafted onto the team in 1959, instantly making a mark on the league with his shooting style. 3 years later, the team was relocated to the Bay Area, officially becoming the San Francisco Warriors. They quickly found their collective footing and by 1964, had pushed their way into the NBA Finals (where they were dispatched by the Celtics). During the following season, Chamberlain was traded.
The franchise changed their name for the final time in 1971. From that point forward, they were known as the Golden State Warriors. After a few promising seasons, the team finally advanced into the NBA Finals in 1975. In a major upset, they swept the Washington Bullets in 4 games. It would prove to be the Warriors's last NBA Championship title.
The team failed to ignite any enthusiasm among fans for nearly 2 decades, during which their performance on the court was uneven. At times, they were productive and made the playoffs. During other seasons, personality issues among star players began to spill onto the court. By 1995, the Warriors seemed to implode, both on the court and in the press.
The early 2000's were spent rebuilding around a trio of talented players. It was only mildly successful and by 2006, the franchise was blocked from the playoffs for its twelfth straight season. Another round of trades were conducted to rebuild again and in 2007, the Warriors finally earned a spot in the playoffs.
Live Games At The Oracle Arena
The Oracle Arena serves as the Warriors's home. It opened in 1966 and is one of the oldest NBA venues in operation. It was heavily renovated in 1997 to expand its seating capacity (currently at 19,600) and add various amenities that are common in other stadiums. Over the past few years, there have been record turnouts for the team's games. To experience the excitement live, reserve your tickets well in advance.
