Detroit Pistons: Return To Glory
Founded in 1941, the Detroit Pistons are the second oldest team in the NBA. During the past 70 years, they have seen their share of success, failure, and controversy. Having begun in the National Basketball League, they joined the NBA in 1948 and quickly gained a loyal fan base. They competed in the Finals in 1955 and 1956, but were defeated both times. Many speculate that the team, in collusion with gamblers, threw the 1955 NBA Finals (though it was never proven).
Starting in 1960, the Pistons endured a 20-year slump during which they failed to win a single division title. There were moments of promise and various players stood out with their individual performances. But, as a team, they failed to rally enough momentum to leave a mark on the league. Finally, in 1981, the franchise experienced a turnaround.
Isiah Thomas was recruited to lead the Pistons, though the team needed a couple of seasons to find their footing. In 1985, they advanced to the playoffs, defeating the New Jersey Nets in the first round. However, their victory quickly faded as they were beaten by the Celtics during round 2.
The Pistons continued to formulate their court strategy and developed a physical style that earned them a reputation in the NBA. The next few years proved to be frustrating as their attempts to reach the NBA Finals were continuously dashed. However, in 1989, their efforts were rewarded. They advanced to the Finals against the Lakers, eventually winning their first NBA Championship title.
Since winning their first NBA title, the Pistons have managed to repeat their success in 1990 and 2004. However, the path has not been a smooth one. Refusing the remain comfortable, the team continues to prepare itself for a return to their former glory.

Playing In The Palace
The Palace of Auburn Hills opened to the public in 1988 and has been the home of the Detroit Pistons ever since. Interestingly, the address of the venue (currently 6 Championship Drive) changes each time one of the basketball teams it hosts wins a league championship. It has a large seating capacity of 22,000 along with 180 luxury suites. To watch the Pistons in action, you can purchase tickets for as little as $15. But, a note of caution: the team has won their division over the past 4 years. Plan ahead and expect tickets to sell quickly.
