Denver Nuggets: Struggling For An NBA Title
The Denver Nuggets were created in 1967 and spent nearly a decade playing in the American Basketball Association before joining the NBA in 1976. Their first 2 seasons in the NBA were promising and the team won division titles in both years. However, they have yet to win a Conference title or NBA Championship title.
Doug Moe was hired as head coach in 1981 and he immediately developed a unique (at the time) offense strategy for the Nuggets. The strategy was to keep the ball moving until a shot opened up. It was an effective approach and the team was known as a high-scoring franchise throughout the 1980's, typically posting over 100 points each game. This strategy also allowed them to become regular playoff contenders.
1990 marked the beginning of a new direction in playing style. Paul Westhead replaced Moe as head coach and immediately encouraged his most productive players to take quick shots. It was a radical departure from Moe's strategy and ultimately ineffective. Westhead was fired at the end of 1993 and Dan Issel was picked to fill the coaching shoes. Despite making it to the playoffs, postseason success eluded the Nuggets, and Issel eventually resigned. The late 1990's were surprisingly bad for the team and they posted some of the NBA's worst losing streaks.
The early 2000's were a rebuilding period. Kiki Vandeweghe was brought in as General Manager and he quickly made significant changes in the lineup. By the end of the 2006 season, the Nuggets had earned their first division title in nearly 2 decades. Also in 2006, the roster was boosted by the hiring of Allen Iverson, one of the highest scorers in the NBA. And in 2008, the team posted one of their best seasons in franchise history.
Playing In The Can
The Denver Nuggets play at Pepsi Center, a venue that seats over 19,300 for NBA events. It was nicknamed "The Can" (due to its sponsor) and also serves as the home for the Colorado Avalanche (NHL) and the Colorado Mammoth (lacrosse). You can visit Pepsi Center to watch the Nuggets perform live by buying tickets online. Prices start as low as $5. However, because the team's performance was encouraging during 2008, seats for home games are expected to sell fast.
