Dallas Mavericks: Pursuing The Title
The Dallas Mavericks were created in 1980 on a wave of high expectations. Dick Motta was hired to coach the new team. The excitement helped them defeat the San Antonio Spurs during their first game, shocking the fans. Unfortunately, the rest of their season wasn't as successful and they ended with a discouraging 15–67 record.
By 1982, the Mavericks seemed to find their footing on the court. While they posted losing numbers (38–44) that season, they were gaining momentum. The following season, the team posted their first winning record, earning a spot in the playoffs (which they eventually lost). The franchise made a number of important acquisitions over the next few years. Sam Perkins, James Donaldson, and Roy Tarpley were added to the roster and by 1987, the Mavericks had posted their best record in franchise history (55–27).
Despite battling their way into the third round of playoffs in 1988, the team was on the cusp of a decline. Donaldson was injured in 1989, effectively destroying their momentum. In 1990, several other players became injured. The following year, Tarpley was arrested and suspended by the NBA. By 1992, the team had practically collapsed.
It wasn't until 1996 that a major rebuilding period started. That season, 27 players shared the court. Michael Finley and A.C. Green were hired the following year to help cement the lineup. The team was sold to Mark Cuban in 2000, signaling a small rebirth for the franchise. And the following 2 seasons showed the Mavericks to be daunting contenders while tickets to their home games sold out regularly.
Finally, in 2006, the franchise earned its way into the NBA Finals for the first time. After winning the first 2 games of the series, the Mavericks were defeated by the Miami Heat. But, the experience had reinvigorated the team.
