Chicago Bulls: Attracting The Masses
The Chicago Bulls were born as an NBA expansion team in 1966 and stunned other teams by immediately advancing to the playoffs. Since then, the franchise is widely-regarded as one of the most popular teams in the league. This is largely due to their performance during the 1990's. The contributions of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, under the watchful guidance of coaching legend Phil Jackson resulted in 6 NBA Championship titles during that decade. It was a dynasty in the making.
The Bulls are known primarily as the home of one of the greatest players in NBA history: Michael Jordan. Before he joined the team, they had difficulty advancing past the playoffs into the Finals. During the late 1970's and early 1980's, their court performance was in steady decline. In 1984, Jordan was acquired and the Bulls's management began rebuilding the team around him.
The next few years passed and the franchise continually earned a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately, despite impressive numbers posted by Jordan, the Bulls were defeated over and over again. It wasn't until 1990 when their fortunes would change for the better.
Two events converged in 1990, creating the perfect storm for a growing dynasty. First, Scottie Pippen joined the team. Second, Phil Jackson was hired as head coach. With a formidable starting lineup and Jackson's leadership, the team was about to launch one of the most successful streaks in NBA history. The fans could not have imagined what was in store.
Twice during the 1990's, the Bulls would achieve a "three-peat." They won the NBA Championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993. They repeated their performance by taking home the title in 1996, 1997, and 1998. However, in 1998, immediately after their sixth NBA title, a long rebuilding period began.
