Charlotte Bobcats: Young And Hungry
When the Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002, Charlotte was left without an NBA franchise. But, they wouldn't need to wait long. In 2004, the Charlotte Bobcats were born as an expansion team. And while they have yet to win any titles in the league, they're young and motivated. Spurring them on is the fact that NBA legend Michael Jordan is a major shareholder in the team, serving as the director of basketball operations.
Though the franchise is young, they have already shown remarkable strength on the court. While they were defeated by the Washington Wizards during their first game, they returned to the court 2 days later to beat the Orlando Magic. After enduring a short 7-game losing streak, they shocked the NBA by overcoming the Detroit Pistons. However, despite showing promise, their first season was marred by a dismal 18–64 record.
In 2005, the Bobcats began drafting gifted young players like Raymond Felton and Sean May. They later picked up Adam Morrison as part of the 2006 Draft. In early 2007, Jordan made a personnel change that most of the players had been expecting: in a press conference Jordan announced that the 2007 season would be the last for Bernie Bickerstaff as head coach. Within 2 months, Sam Vincent was hired to fill the post.
2007 was spent making changes in the player lineup and the management ranks. In a show of faith, the Bobcats offered a 6-year, $57 million contract to their star Gerald Wallace. After 1 season, having posted a disappointing record of 32–50, the recently-hired Vincent was fired. And in early 2008, the young franchise brought their third head coach, Larry Brown, aboard.
Seeing The Bobcats Perform Live
Today, the franchise plays in the Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte. Boasting the NBA's largest video screens, the venue can seat up to 20,000 roaring fans. The arena was constructed primarily for the Bobcats, but the team shares the stadium with an NHL and WNBA franchise. Having just signed Emeka Okafor to an astounding 6-year, $72 million contract, the franchise seems poised to make a splash in the NBA. To watch them dominate the court live, you can reserve your seats starting from $9.
If you're in the area, also check out Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat and Orlando Magic!
