Boston Celtics: More Than Luck
They've played in Boston since their inception in 1946. Since that time, the Boston Celtics have won 17 NBA Championship titles, making them the most successful franchise in NBA history. Creating A Legend
The Celtics didn't show much promise during their first few years in the NBA. In fact, they went bankrupt in the 1950's. However, by 1957, the franchise surprised everyone by making the playoff round. They continued their momentum, progressing to the Finals and secured their first Championship title by edging out the St. Louis Hawks in a 7-game series. It was the beginning of something great.
Through 1969, the Celtics won 9 more NBA titles. Some called the team a dynasty, wondering if any franchise could dethrone them. The following year proved that the team was not infallible and they posted their worst season since 1949. The Celtics spent the next several years regrouping, trying to regain their position at the top of the NBA. During that time, they managed to win another 2 Championships. In 1979, the team picked up one of the most memorable players in NBA history.
Larry Bird joined the Celtics in 1979 as the 6th draft pick. Relatively unknown, he was considered a risky gamble by the franchise. Bird would end up leading the team to 4 more NBA Championship victories. Eventually, Bird retired in 1992 as a result of back problems sustained throughout his career.
Playing In The Garden
The Celtics play their home games at the TD Banknorth Garden stadium. The venue seats 18,624 fans and also hosts the Bruins (hockey) and Blazers (lacrosse). After a construction cost of $160 million, The Garden opened its doors in 1995. The naming rights for the stadium were purchased by Shawmut Bank right before they merged with Fleet Bank. Eventually, those rights were sold to TD Banknorth in 2005.
You can watch the dynasty in person by purchasing individual game tickets. But, be warned: buy them early. Their victory at the 2008 NBA Finals will likely make seats harder to reserve on the day of the game.
