Atlanta Hawks: Frustrated On The Court
Founded in 1946, the Hawks have been renamed twice. From their NBA birth, they were the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. After a relocation in 1951, they became the Milwaukee Hawks. They've played as the Atlanta Hawks since 1968, when they relocated for the last time. Over the past 6 decades, the team has performed respectably in the division, bringing home 14 titles. In 4 of those years, they went on to clinch their Conference. And in 1958, they secured their first NBA Championship title. However, since that year, the title has eluded them.
Though the Hawks played well during the 1940's and 1950's, it wasn't until they arrived in Atlanta that they began to earn clout as a league contender. They dominated their division during the 1960's. In 1976, Ted Turner purchased the franchise and installed Hubie Brown as head coach. Within 4 years, the Hawks had won another division title.
The following years were a time of gradual rebuilding and the team finished the last half of the 1980's with a respectable 50 wins each season. Unfortunately, the first few years of the 1990's would prove disappointing. To add a new direction, Lenny Wilkens was brought aboard as head coach in 1993. While Wilkins was able to amass several seasons of inspiring numbers, the Hawks failed to progress any further than the playoffs. The only notable exception was 1994, Wilkins's first season as head coach.
Beginning in 1999, management brought several new players onto the team, hoping to revive their chances of earning another NBA title. Unfortunately, behavioral problems from the new players took their toll on the franchise. Jim Jackson was sent to drug counseling after smoking marijuana. Rasheed Wallace was benched for most of the 2004 season (for reasons unknown) despite being an All-Star. By the end of the 2005 season, the Hawks had the dubious distinction of posting the worst record in the NBA.
Hope For The Future
The Atlanta Hawks play at the Philips Arena, a $200 million venue that opened in 1999. It has a seating capacity of 18,729 and drew its biggest crowd for a Hawks game during the 2008 playoffs. Despite not having won the NBA title for over 50 years, the franchise is expected to do well during the current season. To be a part of the action, you can purchase tickets for as low as $5.
